EXMOUTH NCI INCIDENTS – 2021
6 October HMCG requested NCI visual of possible hazard of floating flotsam (log) off Dawlish Warren. Watchkeepers unable to see any hazard via optics or CCTV.
1 October NCI asked by HMCG for assistance in search for kite surfer possibly in distress. CG informed of no visual of distressed kite surfer. Observation maintained by NCI. Kite surfer assisted ashore by two other kite surfers.
27 September NCI heard ILB tasked to incident adjacent No17 buoy. NCI had visual on CCTV. HMCG advised of continued observation. Casualties recovered to Starcross by ILB.
26 September Yacht ‘Sea Pigeon’ contacted Exmouth NCI concerned that yacht was entangled with mooring buoy. NCI informed HMCG and that Exeter Harbour Master will assist. NCI advised ‘Sea Pigeon’ to liase with Harbour Master on Ch12. Notification from vessel ‘City of Exeter’ on Ch65 that ‘Sea Pigeon’ freed and underway. NCI in
26 September Yacht ‘Lapelle’ called NCI on Ch65 to advise speedboat ‘Looney’s Leisure’ broken down at channel mouth. NCI informed HMCG. Beach Lifeguard jet ski set out to casualty and Exmouth ILB launched. ILB quickly alongside casualty and towed ‘Looney’s leisure’ to marina.
7 September NCI advised by MoP that unmanned SUP board recovered. HMCG informed by NCI. NCI later confirmed to HMCG that SUP board now claimed.
7 September One person separated from SUP and drifting. NCI advised HMCG. Person picked up by RIB and safely landed ashore. NCI informed HMCG.
30 August Watchkeepers asked by HMCG for assistance in search for inflatable with 3 POB drifting off shore at Dawlish Warren. Shortly after HMCG confirmed casualties safe.
29 August Request received from HMCG to look out for yacht Tinkerbell. HMCG later confirmed incident closed.
28 August Watchkeepers sighted two paddleboarders drifting erratically on flood tide in estuary entrance. Advised HMCG and continued observation until safely ashore.
23 August Following observation on CCTV of large white van immersed in estuary, endeavoured to contact Police. Failing that, contacted Harbour Master who was aware. No risk to life. NFA.

15 August Following call from MoP, maintained watch over kite surfer separated from board. HMCG requested update on situation. Kite surfer and board safely ashore.
10 August Request for local weather conditions received from HMCG following boy lost snorkelling. No visual on CCTV. Lifeguard recovered casualty to safety.
7 August HMCG had a report of 2 kayakers in apparent difficulty 1.5 miles SE of the NCI lookout. NCI located and monitored safe return to shore. Updated HMCG.
31 July Advised HMCG of yacht adrift in estuary and grounded on sea wall. Harbour Master attempted unsuccessfully to lift off. HMCG updated. Yacht later towed off by Harbour Master on rising tide.
27 July Following report of commercial RIB behaving suspiciously, HMCG asked NCI for visual and information. Advised CG that ‘Voyager’ with 12 POB departed Exmouth at 0940. Later confirmed to CG that RIB returned with same number of POB.
15 July Watchkeeper informed HMCG of 15 children observed tombstoning off Mamhead slipway. On advice of CG also reported to Police and Lifeguards. Children departed prior to Police attendance.
3 July Phone call received from HMCG requesting surveillance following report of woman in difficulty in mud between Dawlish and Exe estuary. Reported to HMCG nothing visible. Following launch of Lifeguard PWC, all stations stood down.
23 June ILB launched following report of broken down jet ski (PWC) in estuary. Watchkeeper located casualty on CCTV and reported to HMCG. Exe Sailing Club RIB towed PWC to safety.
21 June HMCG requested visual on woman seen on cliffs threatening suicide. None possible but monitoring continued through CCTV. ILB launched. Police and CG Rescue Team on cliff path. Casualty later safe – with Police.
13 June Call received from MoP abandoning kayak in river due to strong currents. Will be retrieved at low water. Watchkeeper advised HMCG accordingly.
7 June Watchkeeper asked by HMCG for sighting of small yellow craft reported by MoP off Budleigh struggling towards Exmouth. Continued to monitor area using CCTV. HMCG issued radio alert to boating in area. Nothing seen. All later stood down.
7 June Watchkeeper observed three swimmers attempting to swim back from Pole Sands and in difficulty. Advised RNLI Lifeguards who dispatched PWC to investigate. Casualties returned to shore by Lifeguards one at a time.
5 June Report from MoP regarding two swimmers already being observed at No 10 buoy. Advised RNLI Lifeguards who dispatched quad bike. Harbour Master on scene to return swimmers to shore.
3 June HMCG requested sighting of kite surfer reportedly in difficulty. Located casualty using CCTV and reported back. Asked to continue observation. Later advised HMCG that kite surfer ashore unaided.
31 May Watchkeeper observed two males on inflatable drifting eastwards on outgoing tide towards Pole Sands. Telephoned RNLI Lifeguards to request assistance. PWC launched. Casualties retrieved and returned to shore safely.
29 May Following call on Ch 65, watchkeeper located vessel with engine failure off Dawlish and advised HMCG of bearing etc. 3 POB. As requested by HMCG, asked vessel to communicate with HMCG on Ch 73. RIB Lunacy and MLI Thunder arrived on scene. Continued observation and listened in on communications between HMCG and rescue boats. Thunder towed casualty safely back to Exmouth.
19 May MoP reported swimmers sitting on No.10 Buoy, but no signs of distress. Watchkeeper advised HMCG who requested continued observation. Passing RIB collected swimmers and delivered to beach. HMCG notified accordingly.
17 April ERC sculler on Ch 65 reported he required assistance, having picked up kiteboard near Marina. Kitesurfer currently on Pole Sands. Watchkeeper contacted Lifeguards and PWC attended. No help required as RIB exiting Marina had collected board and returned it to kitesurfer. NFA required.
14 April In response to request from HMCG, watchkeeper confirmed no visual on capsized kayak in River Exe. ILB launched and ambulance requested. Radio activity monitored by watchkeeper. Casualty taken to hospital and SAR assets stood down.
19 March Watchkeeper requested by HMCG to maintain observation of yacht aground at low tide. No concerns for crew. Yacht waiting on rising tide to refloat.
19 February Watchkeeper monitored kite surfer stranded on Pole Sands at low tide. Advised HMCG of potential situation arising. They requested continued observation. Later confirmed to HMCG all equipment retrieved and people safely ashore.
2 February Call received from HMCG requesting visual following report of surfer in difficulty in estuary. No sighting possible. Radio traffic indicated local CG on scene to check out.
28 January After failing to contact Harbour Master, advised HMCG of potential hazard in shipping channel. Later managed to contact HM and update position of hazard.
18 January Watchkeeper contacted by HMCG for sighting of kite surfer reported in difficulty off Pole Sands. Confirmed sighting of three kite surfers in no apparent difficulty.
18 January Watchkeeper contacted by HMCG for sighting of walkers stranded on mud in Exe estuary. Confirmed that walkers out of range.
2 January Following observation of IFV taking avoiding action, watchkeeper contacted HMCG to report large tree trunk (5 – 6m long) in channel causing potential danger to shipping. HMCG issued Warning to Mariners.
